Director of Geoscience, Milestone Carbon

Abstract:

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) fluid properties play a critical role in fluid substitution modeling, particularly in applications such as carbon storage monitoring and reservoir characterization.

Key parameters, including CO₂ density, viscosity, and compressibility, vary with pressure and temperature, influencing seismic velocity and bulk modulus changes in porous media.

By replacing in-situ fluids with CO₂ in rock physics models;

  • Fluid substitution helps predict changes in elastic properties,
  • Aiding in the interpretation of time-lapse seismic data,
  • It also serves as a key test for whether 4D seismic should be included in site monitoring plans.

Understanding proper CO₂ behavior under reservoir conditions enhances the accuracy of geophysical assessments and is critical to effective monitoring of CO₂ injection projects.
