Abstract:

The impact of high perm streaks and reservoir heterogeneity on oil and gas production and associated enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques is readily appreciated, but less attention has been paid to the importance of these attributes in relation to carbon sequestration (CCS). Heterogeneities may include more permeable sandstone or limestone beds, permeability enhancement through diagenesis and structural overprints such as fracturing and cataclasis. Other factors serve to degrade reservoir quality, in particular diagenetic cementation.

An understanding of reservoir sedimentology and its impact on high perm streaks in both the horizontal and vertical plane is critical to the successful modeling of carbon dioxide injection and sequestration. Depositional settings ranging from fluvial, aeolian, lacustrine, coastal, shallow to deep marine environments in clastic and carbonate settings are examined in terms of their potential to incorporate significant and predictable thief zones and reservoir heterogeneities that could impact CCS. Examples drawn from real life CCS projects around the world are used to demonstrate both successes and failures relating directly to these variations in reservoir properties.

Speaker Bios:

Jon Noad graduated from Imperial College, London in 1985 with a degree in Geology and started working as a mining geologist in South Africa. He returned to the UK to work in marine cable laying and completed a Masters in Sedimentology, with his thesis focused on Dinosaur Provincial Park, Alberta. This led to a full time PhD, working in eastern Borneo, after which he joined Shell International working Middle East exploration and in several production roles. He moved to Shell Canada in Calgary in 2006, followed by senior geoscience roles, including Exploration Manager, at several major oil companies. Since 2017 he has run many field trips, core logging courses and has taught at two universities. He joined Stantec as a qualified Palaeontologist in 2022 and now undertakes site monitoring for new pipelines and construction projects. He is the company’s SME for subsurface carbon sequestration.
