Abstract:

  • Over the past 25 years, the Rose & Associates DHI (Direct Hydrocarbon Indicator) Consortium has developed a risking methodology that combines traditional geological chance factors with a DHI Index. The approach is supported by a database of more than 400 wells contributed by over 85 oil companies worldwide.
  • The methodology evaluates DHI characteristics based on their location, relationships to analogs, models, and trends, and their impact on seismic response within the sediment column. Data quality—including seismic acquisition and processing, rock and fluid properties, and modeling—is a critical part of the risk analysis process.
  • The consortium database has identified the most important DHI characteristics, common reasons for failure, and a “DHI Threshold Effect” with significant implications for well success rates. Results show that integrating geology is essential, and that the best outcomes require identifying multiple amplitude anomaly characteristics while honoring the fundamentals and integration of all DHI elements.
