Damage to homes, businesses, factories and infrastructure from sinkholes results in millions of dollars in repair and lost revenue charges every year. Sinkholes can appear suddenly at the surface (“daylighting”). The ground literally drops out from under you. However, the karsting development that leads to the sinkhole often takes years to develop and grow toward the surface. During that development, the spalling of material from the sides of the growing aven results in noise emissions that, if detected and properly analyzed, could allow for early intervention and mitigation to prevent costly damages.
MicroSeismic, Inc., working with a preferred client in Florida, has refined an application of its BuriedArray, PSET and rPSET services directed at the early detection of incipient karsting so as to offer the opportunity for mitigation of the sinkhole before it daylights. The service is offered under the brand name KarstAlert™. The service has been active for 2 years now and is ready to tackle other sinkhole hazard challenges anywhere in the world.
