SUMMARY:The Unexpected Reach of Strike-Slip Faulting
DESCRIPTION:Add to Calendar\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Speakers:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Molly TurkoDevon-Energy\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract:\n\n\n\nAlthough often associated with iconic examples like the San Andreas Fault in California or the Anatolian Fault in Turkey\, strike-slip faulting is a widespread phenomenon outside of major transform boundaries with significant implications for basin evolution and hydrocarbon systems. For example\, we see strike-slip faulting associated with reactivation of older structures at oblique angles and even in front of orogenic belts in the form of penetrative strain. Understanding when\, where\, and how these types of strike-slip structures form is vital to unraveling the tectonic history and can aid in mitigating petroleum system risks along with operational risks. Using examples from Oklahoma and Texas\, this presentation will highlight the kinematics of recognizing these structures\, what they imply\, and how they can be exploited. \n\n\n\nWe will delve into the kinematics of recognizing these structures\, emphasizing key indicators such as en echelon faults\, steps and bends\, and pop-ups and pull-aparts. Determining the slip sense provides crucial insights into the paleo-stress field\, enabling predictions of enhanced fracturing and potential sub-seismic faulting which may impact a reservoir either positively or negatively. Understanding fault geometries\, both mapped and modeled/predicted\, is crucial for mitigating operational risks\, including induced seismicity\, mud losses\, frac hits\, and grasping reservoir connectivity. A basic understanding of strike-slip faulting\, combined with the ability to recognize and predict its occurrence within a basin\, is essential for effective reservoir exploration and development. \n\n\n\nIn summary\, we will discuss: \n\n\n\n\nWidespread: Strike-slip faulting extends beyond transform boundaries\, affecting basin evolution and hydrocarbon systems via reactivated structures or strain near orogenic belts.\n\n\n\nImportance: Knowing fault formation aids tectonic analysis and reduces petroleum and operational risks.\n\n\n\nIndicators: En echelon faults\, steps\, bends\, pop-ups\, and pull-aparts reveal strike-slip structures and paleo-stress.\n\n\n\nOperations: Fault geometries predict fracturing\, sub-seismic faults\, and risks like seismicity\, mud losses\, and connectivity.\n\n\n\nExploration: Recognizing strike-slip faults boosts reservoir exploration\, as shown in Oklahoma and Texas.

SUMMARY:Hydraulic fracture propagation along bedding planes might be more prevalent than we think
DESCRIPTION:Add to Calendar\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Speakers:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgor DontsovChief Scientist\, ResFrac\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract:\n\n\n\nAbstract Summary \n\n\n\nHydraulic fractures in unconventional reservoirs are often assumed to be vertical\, but growing field and laboratory evidence shows that fractures can also propagate horizontally along bedding planes. These horizontal fractures are influenced by both rock properties such as shale anisotropy and stress relaxation and operational factors like well spacing and fluid volumes. Understanding the interaction between geology and stimulation intensity is critical for predicting and managing horizontal fracture formation. \n\n\n\nKey Points \n\n\n\n\nBoth rock properties and operational choices control fracture geometry.\n\n\n\n\nChallenging the vertical-only assumption \n\n\n\n\nField data increasingly shows hydraulic fractures can propagate horizontally along bedding planes.\n\n\n\n\nField evidence of horizontal fractures \n\n\n\n\nObserved using tiltmeters\, microseismic monitoring\, fiber-optic data\, casing deformation\, and vertical core samples with propped horizontal fractures.\n\n\n\n\nShale rock properties matter \n\n\n\n\nShales are finely layered and highly anisotropic in:\n\n\n\nElastic properties\n\n\n\nFracture toughness\n\n\n\nTensile strength\n\n\n\nTensile strength anisotropy makes it easier to initiate fractures along bedding planes than across them.\n\n\n\n\nHorizontal fractures can form even under higher vertical stress \n\n\n\n\nLaboratory experiments confirm that sub-horizontal fractures can initiate despite vertical stress exceeding horizontal stress.\n\n\n\n\nStress relaxation increases fracture risk \n\n\n\n\nShale viscoelasticity and creep cause stress relaxation\, moving the stress state toward hydrostatic conditions.\n\n\n\nThis significantly increases the likelihood of horizontal fracture initiation.\n\n\n\n\nOperational factors amplify the effect \n\n\n\n\nMulti-well developments\, higher fluid volumes\, and tighter well spacing increase reservoir stress.\n\n\n\nAccumulated stress shadowing raises minimum horizontal stress until vertical fractures are no longer favored.\n\n\n\n\nRock has a stimulation limit \n\n\n\n\nEach formation has a threshold beyond which horizontal fractures are likely to form.\n\n\n\nExceeding this limit is a function of both geology and operational intensity.\n\n\n\n\nImplications for operations \n\n\n\n\nStimulation designs must be tailored to formation-specific limits if horizontal fractures are to be avoided.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Bios:\n\n\n\nEgor Dontsov is a Chief Scientist at ResFrac Corporation. Previously\, he worked at W. D. Von Gonten Laboratories and was an Assistant Professor at the University of Houston. He holds a B.S. degree in Physics from Novosibirsk State University in Russia and a Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Dontsov has over ten years of academic and industrial experience in hydraulic fracturing and has co-authored over 60 peer-reviewed journal publications and over 20 conference papers\, most of which are related to the numerical modeling of hydraulic fracture growth and proppant transport. Dr. Dontsov is a lifetime ARMA and SPE member and currently serves as the Chair of ARMA’s Technical Committee on Hydraulic Fracturing (TCHF)\, as well as the member of ARMA’s Board of Directors.

SUMMARY:Energy Storage Solutions - Monitoring Wellbore and Reservoir Integrity Through Passive Sensing Methods
DESCRIPTION:Add to Calendar\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Speakers:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBill BartlingCo-Founder\, Geo2Watts\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract:\n\n\n\nThe rapid growth of episodic and intermittent energy generation systems presents many challenges to balancing the grid\, foremost among them is the requirement of pairing them with energy storage systems that can deploy electricity during times of no solar or wind generation. The storage solutions range in delivery capacities from a few hours to greater than ten hours\, or even days\, and have a spectrum of energy delivery capacities (MW/hour). Many of these solutions involve the use of end of life oil and gas boreholes and some incorporate the subsurface reservoirs as part of their storage solution. In many of these cases\, the wells and reservoirs being used are are being subjected to strains unlike what they have experienced in the past and as such require monitoring to both provide data for optimization of the process and provide early detection of a potential compromise of the system elements. Microseismic monitoring has a long history of monitoring subsurface operations via surface and downhole instruments\, especially in hydraulic fracturing demonstrating the ability of the method to provide pertinent and real or near-real time information to operators. New instrumentation measuring faint wellbore and reservoir signals based on downhole fiber optics using all three data bands\, temperature\, acoustic and pressure can potentially provide important feedback to these processes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Bios:\n\n\n\nBill Bartling is Co-Founder at Geo2Watts and advisor for Lillianah Technologies.
