SUMMARY:Integrated Microseismic and 3D Seismic Inversion for Predicting Effective Minimum Horizontal Stress
DESCRIPTION:Add to Calendar\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Speakers:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBill Goodway\,Scientific AdvisorQeye\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract:\n\n\n\nThe ability to high-grade unconventional resource plays is an essential requirement for optimizing completions to maximize stimulated rock volume. Effective hydraulic pore pressure stimulation requires the opening of existing natural fractures and the presence of conducive geomechanical properties within the formation capable of supporting extensive induced fractures. \n\n\n\nThis presentation will describe the combined use of microseismic verification and validation with rock physics 3D seismic inversion including pore pressure and differential horizontal tectonic stress anisotropy used to estimate the Effective Minimum Horizontal Closure Stress gradient to predict effective stimulated permeability. These microseismic and seismic derived geomechanical model estimates can then be quantitatively correlated and calibrated to engineering DFIT measurements. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Bios:\n\n\n\nBill Goodway obtained a B.Sc. in Geology from University College London and an M.Sc. in Geophysics from the University of Calgary. After working in the United Kingdom\, he joined PanCanadian Petroleum in 1985 where he became Team Lead of a Seismic Analysis Group. SUMMARY:Natural Fracture Reactivation during Hydraulic Fracturing: New Insight from Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing Measurements
DESCRIPTION:Add to Calendar\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Speakers:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Ge JinAssociate Professor\,Colorado School of Mines\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract:\n\n\n\nThis presentation highlights new insights gained through Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DFOS). Acting as a “subsurface nervous system\,” fiber-optic cables installed in offset monitoring wells simultaneously record high-frequency microseismic signals and high-resolution strain changes. These measurements enable imaging of pre-existing fractures and direct observation of their reactivation during hydraulic stimulation. \n\n\n\nUsing field examples from unconventional oil and gas reservoirs and Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS)\, we demonstrate how local geology can significantly influence fracture growth and behavior. Key observations include: \n\n\n\n\nHydraulic fracture deflection by natural fracture networks\n\n\n\nLarge-scale shear reactivation along clay-rich horizontal bedding planes\n\n\n\nFracture redirection caused by pre-existing geological features\n\n\n\n\nThese high-resolution DFOS measurements provide unprecedented insight into the relationship between geology and fracture mechanics. The results offer valuable opportunities to: \n\n\n\n\nOptimize stimulation efficiency\n\n\n\nImprove fracture network characterization\n\n\n\nReduce operational risk and enhance well integrity\n\n\n\nBetter understand and manage induced seismicity\n\n\n\n\nBy revealing how hydraulic fractures interact with existing subsurface structures\, DFOS is transforming our ability to characterize reservoirs and improve stimulation design. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Bios:\n\n\n\nDr. Ge Jin is Associate Professor of Geophysics and co-PI of Reservoir Characterization Project at Colorado School of Mines. His research focuses on Distributed Fiber-Optic Sensing (DFOS) applications in the fields of oil & gas\, geothermal\, CO2 sequestration\, smart city\, and earthquake hazard. He is also interested in machine-learning applications and seismic imaging. He obtained his Ph.D. in Geophysics from Columbia University in the City of New York\, and dual B.S. in Geophysics and Computer Science from Peking University in Beijing. He worked as a research geophysicist in the oil industry for five years before joining Colorado School of Mines as a faculty member in 2019.d

SUMMARY:Oil and Gas vs. Geothermal: Siblings\, Friends\, or Foes?
DESCRIPTION:Add to Calendar\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Speakers:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrederic GuinotManaging Director\, From Bottom to Top\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract:\n\n\n\nOil and gas people often think that they can bring a lot to the geothermal industry\, and even more so in layoff times! Geothermal people seldom think that they can bring something to the oil & gas industry. Why is that? There are good and bad reasons\, but maybe also lots of misunderstandings and preconceived ideas. \n\n\n\nThe two industries look like twins because they both rely on extracting something from the ground by drilling. However\, these twin industries\, both relying on subsurface expertise\, have also a lot of dissimilarities. It is only by understanding these differences\, technical and financial that collaboration between the two sectors can lead to fruitful results\, that should benefit both sectors. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Bios:\n\n\n\nBio to come

SUMMARY:The Geology of Successful Carbon Sequestration
DESCRIPTION:Add to Calendar\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Speakers:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Jon NoadSenior Palaeontologist\, Stantec Consulting\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract:\n\n\n\nHigh-permeability (“high perm”) streaks and reservoir heterogeneity are well known to affect oil and gas production and enhanced oil recovery (EOR)\, but their role in carbon capture and storage (CCS) has received less attention. \n\n\n\nReservoir heterogeneity can come from: \n\n\n\n\nMore permeable rock layers (e.g.\, sandstone or limestone)\n\n\n\nChanges from diagenesis (chemical/physical alterations after deposition)\n\n\n\nStructural features like fractures and cataclasis\n\n\n\n\nSome processes reduce reservoir quality\, especially: \n\n\n\n\nDiagenetic cementation (which blocks pore spaces and reduces permeability)\n\n\n\n\nUnderstanding sedimentology (how rocks were deposited) is critical because: \n\n\n\n\nIt controls the distribution of high-permeability streaks\n\n\n\nThese streaks occur both horizontally and vertically\n\n\n\nThey strongly influence CO₂ injection and storage behavior\n\n\n\n\nDifferent depositional environments affect reservoir behavior\, including: \n\n\n\n\nFluvial (river)\n\n\n\nAeolian (wind-blown)\n\n\n\nLacustrine (lake)\n\n\n\nCoastal\n\n\n\nShallow to deep marine\n\n\n\nBoth clastic and carbonate systems\n\n\n\n\nThese environments can create: \n\n\n\n\nPredictable “thief zones” (areas where injected CO₂ flows too easily)\n\n\n\nComplex heterogeneities that impact CCS performance\n\n\n\n\nReal-world CCS projects show that: \n\n\n\n\nUnderstanding these variations is key to effective carbon sequestration\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Bios:\n\n\n\nJon Noad graduated from Imperial College\, London in 1985 with a degree in Geology and started working as a mining geologist in South Africa. He returned to the UK to work in marine cable laying and completed a Masters in Sedimentology\, with his thesis focused on Dinosaur Provincial Park\, Alberta. This led to a full time PhD\, working in eastern Borneo\, after which he joined Shell International working Middle East exploration and in several production roles. He moved to Shell Canada in Calgary in 2006\, followed by senior geoscience roles\, including Exploration Manager\, at several major oil companies. Since 2017 he has run many field trips\, core logging courses and has taught at two universities. SUMMARY:Energy Storage Solutions - Monitoring Wellbore and Reservoir Integrity Through Passive Sensing Methods
DESCRIPTION:Add to Calendar\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Speakers:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBill BartlingCo-Founder\, Geo2Watts\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract:\n\n\n\nThe rapid growth of episodic and intermittent energy generation systems presents many challenges to balancing the grid\, foremost among them is the requirement of pairing them with energy storage systems that can deploy electricity during times of no solar or wind generation. The storage solutions range in delivery capacities from a few hours to greater than ten hours\, or even days\, and have a spectrum of energy delivery capacities (MW/hour). Many of these solutions involve the use of end of life oil and gas boreholes and some incorporate the subsurface reservoirs as part of their storage solution. In many of these cases\, the wells and reservoirs being used are are being subjected to strains unlike what they have experienced in the past and as such require monitoring to both provide data for optimization of the process and provide early detection of a potential compromise of the system elements. Microseismic monitoring has a long history of monitoring subsurface operations via surface and downhole instruments\, especially in hydraulic fracturing demonstrating the ability of the method to provide pertinent and real or near-real time information to operators. New instrumentation measuring faint wellbore and reservoir signals based on downhole fiber optics using all three data bands\, temperature\, acoustic and pressure can potentially provide important feedback to these processes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Bios:\n\n\n\nBill Bartling is Co-Founder at Geo2Watts and advisor for Lillianah Technologies. SUMMARY:Hydraulic fracture propagation along bedding planes might be more prevalent than we think
DESCRIPTION:Add to Calendar\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Speakers:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEgor DontsovChief Scientist\, ResFrac\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract:\n\n\n\nAbstract Summary \n\n\n\nHydraulic fractures in unconventional reservoirs are often assumed to be vertical\, but growing field and laboratory evidence shows that fractures can also propagate horizontally along bedding planes. These horizontal fractures are influenced by both rock properties such as shale anisotropy and stress relaxation and operational factors like well spacing and fluid volumes. Understanding the interaction between geology and stimulation intensity is critical for predicting and managing horizontal fracture formation. \n\n\n\nKey Points \n\n\n\n\nBoth rock properties and operational choices control fracture geometry.\n\n\n\n\nChallenging the vertical-only assumption \n\n\n\n\nField data increasingly shows hydraulic fractures can propagate horizontally along bedding planes.\n\n\n\n\nField evidence of horizontal fractures \n\n\n\n\nObserved using tiltmeters\, microseismic monitoring\, fiber-optic data\, casing deformation\, and vertical core samples with propped horizontal fractures.\n\n\n\n\nShale rock properties matter \n\n\n\n\nShales are finely layered and highly anisotropic in:\n\n\n\nElastic properties\n\n\n\nFracture toughness\n\n\n\nTensile strength\n\n\n\nTensile strength anisotropy makes it easier to initiate fractures along bedding planes than across them.\n\n\n\n\nHorizontal fractures can form even under higher vertical stress \n\n\n\n\nLaboratory experiments confirm that sub-horizontal fractures can initiate despite vertical stress exceeding horizontal stress.\n\n\n\n\nStress relaxation increases fracture risk \n\n\n\n\nShale viscoelasticity and creep cause stress relaxation\, moving the stress state toward hydrostatic conditions.\n\n\n\nThis significantly increases the likelihood of horizontal fracture initiation.\n\n\n\n\nOperational factors amplify the effect \n\n\n\n\nMulti-well developments\, higher fluid volumes\, and tighter well spacing increase reservoir stress.\n\n\n\nAccumulated stress shadowing raises minimum horizontal stress until vertical fractures are no longer favored.\n\n\n\n\nRock has a stimulation limit \n\n\n\n\nEach formation has a threshold beyond which horizontal fractures are likely to form.\n\n\n\nExceeding this limit is a function of both geology and operational intensity.\n\n\n\n\nImplications for operations \n\n\n\n\nStimulation designs must be tailored to formation-specific limits if horizontal fractures are to be avoided.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Bios:\n\n\n\nEgor Dontsov is a Chief Scientist at ResFrac Corporation. Previously\, he worked at W. D. Von Gonten Laboratories and was an Assistant Professor at the University of Houston. SUMMARY:The Unexpected Reach of Strike-Slip Faulting
DESCRIPTION:Add to Calendar\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Speakers:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Molly TurkoDevon-Energy\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract:\n\n\n\nAlthough often associated with iconic examples like the San Andreas Fault in California or the Anatolian Fault in Turkey\, strike-slip faulting is a widespread phenomenon outside of major transform boundaries with significant implications for basin evolution and hydrocarbon systems. For example\, we see strike-slip faulting associated with reactivation of older structures at oblique angles and even in front of orogenic belts in the form of penetrative strain. Understanding when\, where\, and how these types of strike-slip structures form is vital to unraveling the tectonic history and can aid in mitigating petroleum system risks along with operational risks. Using examples from Oklahoma and Texas\, this presentation will highlight the kinematics of recognizing these structures\, what they imply\, and how they can be exploited. \n\n\n\nWe will delve into the kinematics of recognizing these structures\, emphasizing key indicators such as en echelon faults\, steps and bends\, and pop-ups and pull-aparts. Determining the slip sense provides crucial insights into the paleo-stress field\, enabling predictions of enhanced fracturing and potential sub-seismic faulting which may impact a reservoir either positively or negatively. Understanding fault geometries\, both mapped and modeled/predicted\, is crucial for mitigating operational risks\, including induced seismicity\, mud losses\, frac hits\, and grasping reservoir connectivity. A basic understanding of strike-slip faulting\, combined with the ability to recognize and predict its occurrence within a basin\, is essential for effective reservoir exploration and development. \n\n\n\nIn summary\, we will discuss: \n\n\n\n\nWidespread: Strike-slip faulting extends beyond transform boundaries\, affecting basin evolution and hydrocarbon systems via reactivated structures or strain near orogenic belts.\n\n\n\nImportance: Knowing fault formation aids tectonic analysis and reduces petroleum and operational risks.\n\n\n\nIndicators: En echelon faults\, steps\, bends\, pop-ups\, and pull-aparts reveal strike-slip structures and paleo-stress.\n\n\n\nOperations: Fault geometries predict fracturing\, sub-seismic faults\, and risks like seismicity\, mud losses\, and connectivity.\n\n\n\nExploration: Recognizing strike-slip faults boosts reservoir exploration\, as shown in Oklahoma and Texas.
